Abstract

Dialek Ibanik yang tergolong di dalamnya variasi seperti Seberuang, Kantuk, Iban dan Mualang berkongsi fakta historis yang sama, tetapi kurang jelas susur galurnya. Hal ini menimbulkan beberapa persoalan. Seberapa luaskah cakupan rangkaian dialek Ibanik? Apakah ‘gunung’ dan ‘dataran’ utama dalam topografi linguistik yang berbeza dan serupa yang terpakai dalam penamaan dialek Ibanik? Siapakah yang memahami pertuturan siapa? Komuniti mana yang menuturkan dialek sendiri, dan yang mana pula dipaksa menggunakan lingua franca untuk berkomunikasi? Kesemua persoalan ini dibincangkan dari tiga perspektif berteraskan metafora yang dipinjam daripada ilmu fizik, yakni ‘zarah’, ‘gelombang’ dan ‘medan’. Akhir sekali, tulisan ini berhajat untuk mencari titik temu dan perbezaan antara ketiga-tiga perspektif.
