Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study explores young people’s experiences of emotional distress and involvement in drug addiction in Tatau District, Sarawak. The qualitative case study involved six purposively selected informants: five young men with experience of drug use or addiction and one narcotics investigating officer (AIO) from the Tatau District Police Headquarters. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) approach. Five themes were identified: family factors; emotional distress and the process of involvement; the effects of addiction; coping and recovery; and interventions. In the informants’ accounts, family conflict, exposure to peers or relatives who used drugs, unemployment, financial strain and limited social support emerged as important contexts associated with involvement and repeated use. Some informants described drug use as a temporary way of coping with distress, although it did not address the underlying difficulties. Given the small, location-specific qualitative sample, the findings do not establish causality or represent all young people. The study points to psychosocial support, family strengthening, healthier coping strategies, skills training, employment opportunities and inter-agency coordination as areas for consideration in community-based prevention and recovery.
