Abstract

ABSTRACT

In the counselling profession, decision-making style and stress levels play a crucial role in determining service effectiveness and professional well-being. This study aimed to examine decision-making styles, stress levels, and the relationship between these two variables among counsellors working in Religious Affairs Offices in the Northern Zone of Malaysia. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted involving 34 counsellors selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the General Decision-Making Style (GDMS) questionnaire and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation analysis with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The descriptive findings indicated that the majority of counsellors demonstrated a moderate level of decision-making style and a low level of perceived stress. The findings revealed that counselors demonstrated a high level of rational decision-making style, followed by moderate levels of dependent and intuitive styles, while spontaneous and avoidant styles were at low levels. The majority of counselors also reported low levels of perceived stress. Correlation analysis indicated that the rational decision-making style was significantly and negatively associated with perceived stress, whereas the avoidant decision-making style showed a strong and significant positive association with perceived stress. In contrast, intuitive, dependent, and spontaneous decision-making styles were not significantly associated with perceived stress. These findings suggest that a greater tendency toward rational decision-making is associated with lower perceived stress, whereas a greater tendency toward avoidant decision-making is associated with higher perceived stress among counselors. The findings provide a basis for further discussion and practical implications for counsellor training and stress management programmes in Religious Affairs Offices, while also supporting the development of organisational policies aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of counselling services.
