ABSTRACT
The growth of digital sources requires historians to master not only source criticism but also metadata management, provenance, file integrity, preservation, access, and ethical representation. This article examines the position of digital curation as a field of study within the Bachelor of Applied History Programme at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). The study employs a qualitative approach through document analysis of scholarly works, professional standards, authoritative documents, heritage institution portals, and the teaching documents and assessment activities of SALNK3613 Digital Curation. The analysis demonstrates that digital curation has an organised body of knowledge and practice encompassing six core areas: source selection and evaluation; documentation and metadata; management and preservation; historical interpretation; access and public communication; and ethics and representation. Within UUM's Applied History Programme, the field has been implemented through project-based learning involving the development of collections using Omeka Classic, the production of websites and virtual exhibitions with 360-degree virtual-tour elements, field documentation, and digital bulletin publication. These activities show that digital curation is not merely software training, but an interdisciplinary field of study that connects historical thinking, evidence management, digital literacy, public communication, and ethical responsibility. Its place in the curriculum helps prepare Applied History graduates to select, preserve, interpret, and communicate historical heritage in credible, sustainable, and socially relevant ways.
