ABSTRACT
This study aims to examine the role of Malay administrators in the state of Johor's economic sector from 1862 to 1914. The primary objective of this research is to analyses the contributions of Malay administrators to Johor's economy, particularly in the commercial agriculture and mining sectors, which form the backbone of the state's economic development. Existing studies have predominantly focused on the roles of Chinese merchants and immigrants who dominated these sectors, thereby overlooking the contributions of Malay administrators, who were, in fact, pivotal to Johor’s economic success. Therefore, this study seeks to re-evaluate the role of these administrators, with a specific focus on aspects of economic governance. Drawing on archival sources, including the administrative records of the state of Johor, official correspondence, and personal notes of Malay administrators, and employing historical research methodology, this study conducts a qualitative analysis of the role played by Malay administrators in Johor’s economic sector. The findings indicate that Malay administrators indeed played a significant role in driving Johor’s economic development.
